Yarra Valley Caviar prides itself on its environmental practices, and humane treatment of its salmon.
A report recently released (March 2010) by the Victorian Government has backed that, finding Yarra Valley Caviar has, despite severe drought conditions, managed to maintain environmental excellence.
The study by the Department of Primary Industries* into the environmental impact of aquaculture farms on the environment, says Yarra Valley Caviar’s long term effects on the surrounding environment have been noted as inconsequential.
The report draws reference to the farms management practices, which have seen the water quality on the Rubicon River in the Yarra Valley Ranges, where Yarra Valley Caviar is based, improved from previous studies.
It also references Yarra Valley Caviar as having less clustering of its salmon, which again reduces it environmental footprint.

Yarra Valley Caviar practices a unique natural farming process including:
• Refusing to use antibiotics or chemicals
• Using natural river conditions ideal for spawning
• Keeping stock levels low, so the fish are stress-free
• Using bio-sustainable farming methods that don’t affect wild fish populations or their environment
• Following UK soil association guidelines for organic aquaculture
The fish are raised in long earthen ponds beside the river, which are fed by waterfalls creating a strong current for the fish swim, so they’re living in their own natural environment.
With no added antibiotics or chemicals, the fish thrive in the cold, clean and clear waters and are very active. Yarra Valley Caviar believes the reason its fish are so willing to spawn year after year, is directly related to the environment in which they live.
